Three Word Summary: Everything is Awesome
Legos are awesome. And so is The Lego Movie.
This is because the film is as entertaining to kids today as it is to those who were kids when this ‘system of interlocking bricks’ was introduced back in 1958, a.k.a. adults.
This is the story of Emmett, who is normal to the point of obscurity, whose boring life is changed drastically when he discovers the legendary Piece of Resistance and stumbles into a prophecy.
Dubbed The Special, Emmett joins a band of rebel ‘master-builders’ in stopping the evil Lord Business from destroying the Lego multi-verse with a super-weapon called the Kragle.
It sounds a little overblown and far-fetched — because it is. But that’s where the beauty lies. Because overblown and far-fetched are exactly the kind of stories that children imagine and bring to life through toys like Legos.
From the catchy theme song to the unique character names, the Lego world was straight from the minds of kids everywhere. Which is what makes is so perfect and appealing to everyone who has ever been a kid.
The dialogue manages to be funny without being crude or silly. The characters remain original despite their cliches, or perhaps because of them. And the plot is fresh and touching and surprising.
It’s no small statement to compare this flick to Toy Story, but it legitimately enters that sacred territory. And largely because they both deal with the same subject matter — toys.
This managed to be so much more than just an animated film — this was a family movie. Wholesome, while also humorous. Genuinely entertaining for people of all ages. These kinds of films don’t come around often — so cherish them when they do.
The climax of this story is what makes this story so great. And what makes it even better was that no one sees it coming. Which is why I won’t reveal any of the details here — you’ll just have to go see it for yourself.
Speaking as a life-long Lego fan, I was thoroughly entertained and impressed by the movie built brick-by-brick, and which could have easily been a disaster. The Lego Movie reminded me of what it was like to play with Legos and what it was like to have a wild, child-like imagination.
Absolutely fun for anybody who goes out there to see this. Even parents. Good review.
