Three Word Summary: Americans are jerks
Frank seems to be the only decent person in a sea of vapid, mindless jerks. His neighbors are inconsiderate. His co-workers only regurgitate what they saw on TV. His boss fires him for being friendly to the receptionist. His ex-wife is ignorant and his daughter is a spoiled brat.
So when he gets the news from his doctor that he has an inoperable brain tumor, it’s almost a relief. Frank resolves to steal his neighbor’s’ car and go on a cross-country rampage murdering those he deems unfit for civilization. Which is most of the people he encounters.
Along the way, he meets 16-year-old Roxy, who seems even more fed up with the moron-ridden American culture and even more eager to rid the world of said morons than Frank. Despite his protests, she convinces him to let her tag along and assist in the assassinations.
No normal person condones murder — myself especially. But it certainly had an edge of catharsis when the unlikely duo guns down a gang of teenagers talking at the movies. And then a mob of protesting radical religious freaks reminiscent of the Westboro Baptist Church.
This was Bonnie and Clyde of this generation with some Natural Born Killers mixed in. Except that these protagonists weren’t out for personal gain, only avenging the death of basic human decency.
The other difference is the age gap between middle aged Frank and teenage Roxy. She seems a little disappointed that they won’t end up becoming lovers. To Frank, the oversexualization of young girls is part of what is wrong with the country, so he rightly refuses.
Naturally, things begin to catch up with the two wayward serial killers and it’s no surprise that it doesn’t end well. But Frank and Roxy finish standing up what they started fighting for — decency. It’s only ironic that they were driven to such indecent means to prove their point.
