Three-Word Summary: Open your brain
Rating: 3/5
Look at the big brain on Lucy.
If you ignore the fact that the premise is implausible and borderline silly, then this movie isn’t all that bad.
Lucy is a unfortunate young woman who gets caught up in a Korean drug smuggling ring. While transporting a new, blue substance, she accidentally ingests some and starts going crazy.
By crazy, I mean that her brain begins functioning at increasingly higher levels, which allows her to gradually gain superpowers. These include controlling televisions, lifting people off the ground and eventually time travel.
How all of this is done, since you were wondering, is helpfully explained by scientist Morgan Freeman. Lucy eventually finds Dr. Freeman and helps him to better understand and harness the infinite power of her mind.
Along with some stunning special effects, this movie had some very well done cinematography that helped keep the movie out of the doldrums of predictability.
But in the end, there were no interesting twists or turns. In fact, there were no challenges facing the semi-omnipotent Lucy. Even the enraged Korean druglords can do nothing to stand in her way.
So while it wasn’t quite predictable, neither was it exactly understandable. And while it was quite original, it never did anything very substantial.
In other words, entertaining to watch, easy to forget.
