Three-Word Summary: Worst movie ever
Since its release in 2003, The Room has become a cult classic. It’s the quintessential so-bad-it’s-good movie, the Plan 9 from Outer Space of our generation.
People flock to theaters for midnight showings to participate in the strange rituals that have developed around the film, such as hurling insults and plastic spoons at the screen. Indeed, this is a movie you can’t watch by yourself; it has to be experienced with a raucous crowd.
To hear director/writer/producer/creator/star Tommy Wiseau tell it, that was all part of the plan. Wiseau claims that he created The Room as a black humor film, rather than a misguided attempt at serious drama.
Wiseau’s personality is nearly as mysterious as the supposed plot of the film. There are so many unanswered questions about both:
- Why is it called The Room?
- What kind of accent does he have?
- Who are these random characters?
- Seriously, what country is this guy from?
But the baffling sensation is just part of the unmistakable experience of The Room. From the clunky dialogue to the awkward R&B sex scenes, you just can’t help but laugh.
The terribly humorous experience is exactly why people keep returning to watch time and time again; the same way that they line up to sing along with the campy classic Rocky Horror Picture Show.
To try and explain the plot wouldn’t do it justice. Essentially, Johnny (Wiseau) is engaged to Lisa, who is also sleeping with his best friend Mark.
Meanwhile in San Francisco, Johnny is helping to raise a man/boy of unknown age named Denny, who suddenly gets into trouble with drugs. Along with a slew of other random characters who appear and dissapear as quickly as scene changes. Oh, and Lisa’s mother has cancer.
But understanding minor things like plot and character development isn’t important as just enjoying the majesty of the mayhem. There’s no way to truly capture it in a simple movie review; you have to go experience it for your self. Bring some spoons.
