Three Word Summary: Mysterious school reunion
I love Britanick. The New York-based comedy duo of Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney is hilarious. Their web videos are well known and they’re beginning to work their way into real motion pictures, such as the little-known Searching For Sonny. I probably wouldn’t have given the film a second glance if it didn’t star both halves of Britanick.
The movie is about three former high school friends who return home for their tenth high school anniversary. Then they realize that one of their mutual friends, the eponymous Sonny, is missing. When another classmate is found dead of an apparent suicide, things get stranger.
As inauspicious events continue to unfold, the friends slowly realize that these events closely resemble the plot of the play they produced in high school, written by Sonny.
The plot was far from brilliant and the twist ending was close to predictable, but this was still an enjoyable film to watch on a lazy Saturday morning. The acting was passable and the characters were silly in the best way possible.
Nick and Brian played essentially the same characters they portray in nearly all of their comedy sketches; namely, Brian is an unsure loser and Nick is a pompous, loud-mouth loser. It’s safe to say that the know the roles well and play them to perfection.
The film falls short of other movies with larger budgets and bigger names, but where it separates itself from the other middle-of-the-road independent films is in creative cinematography and original writing. Certain parts of the narrative lapse into cliche, but enough is unique enough to keep the audience engaged and occasionally laughing.
