Three-Word Summary: Show, detective genius

Sherlock is back. Back from the dead, that is.

After a two year lapse, the BBC has revived the show featuring the modern adaptation of world’s most well-known detective.

In the series two finale, Sherlock seemingly falls to his imminent death only to reappear near his own tombstone just before the credits rolled. Now the much-anticipated third series finally brings our favorite crime investigator back to life.

Sherlock is far from the only adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth, but it is the best. Not to take anything away from the pair of Guy Ritchie films or the CBS show Elementary — they’re fine.

But Sherlock is the best. For a number of reasons.

Because Benedict Cumberbatch is the best Sherlock. And Martin Freeman is the best Watson. They are two of the best actors on the market and their chemistry is immediately evident.

And the BBC is the best network for the show, because Sherlock Holmes belongs in London and deserves to be made by the British.

It’s fast and perplexing and sometimes hard to understand what the characters are saying with those accents. But that’s called authenticity. Mysteries are meant to have a degree of mystery.

One of the best aspects of the show in comparison to its counterparts is its complexion. So far, the show has run for two series, both comprising of three, 90-minute episodes.

Those are practically feature films by our standards. It allows for the plot and characters to fully develop during the course of the episode while still allowing for multiple sequences during a single season.

Best of all, no commercials. Even during the live broadcast, which comes on public broadcasting here in the States. It’s an hour and a half of solid, non-stop Sherlock, which is both overwhelming and delightful.

The dialogue is funny. The plots are mind-bending. The characters are both classically memorable and refreshingly reinvented.

This truly is Sherlock Holmes for the modern era.
